The industry lost that expertise, both in terms of direct, hands-on manufacturing, but also in terms of teaching younger people how to do the job, explains Nick Cunningham, an analyst at Agency Partners.

Thompson Aero Seating is one of the largest seat manufacturing companies worldwide. It makes first class and business class seats, which are typically found at the front of passenger aircraft and feature privacy-simulating enclosures, built-in entertainment systems, and ample leg room.

Northern Ireland's Role in Aircraft Seat Manufacturing

Northern Ireland is a major hub for aircraft seat manufacturing, with companies such as Thompson Aero Seating, Collins Aerospace, and Safran operating in the region. According to Invest NI, an economic development agency, just under one third of the world's aircraft seats are manufactured in Northern Ireland.

Thompson Aero Seating, which was acquired by a Chinese company in 2016, has facilities on six continents. It employs over 650 people in Northern Ireland and has a number of job vacancies listed on its website.

Challenges and Innovations in the Industry

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the aerospace manufacturing industry, leading to a slowdown in demand for aircraft seats. However, Thompson Aero Seating has been able to sidestep this problem with its in-house testing facilities.

The company is also developing new working practices and investing in automation to improve efficiency. We can seamlessly slot people in, and they can now work through these different stages with no computers, says Eoin Murray, operations manager.
